Finding the perfect children’s gift

I am so lucky and proud to have 5 nieces, 3 nephews and 2 godchildren. However, that means I need to pick at least 10 thoughtful birthday presents every year! When I choose a gift for a child I am mindful of 3 things:

  1. The recipient will actually use it
  2. The gift has longevity
  3. The parent will be pleased too

So I have 3 main gift areas that I tend to choose from; books, games and clothes.

I often default to books, or book vouchers, as gifts. I love reading and children’s books are wonderful. I am always mesmerised by the illustrations, rhymes, descriptions and imaginative stories. For younger children I highly recommend the ‘Oi…’ range of books by Kes Gray and Jim Field. Another story that has been well-loved by my sons is ‘The Book With No Pictures’ by B.J. Novak.

In our house, we are serious boardgame players. Alongside the ‘big’ names of Monopoly and Scrabble we have also fallen in love with Cranium, Ticket to Ride, Azul and Yahtzee. Top Trump cards have also been very handy for playing when we wait for food at a cafe or take public transport. Puzzles are also popular with my youngest son. He loves challenging himself with bigger puzzles and the Orchard Toys range of games and puzzles never fail to disappoint.

I have found that premium quality clothes also make lovely gifts. As parents we tend to buy the functional clothing, but when I choose clothing as a gift I like to choose items that are more fun and higher quality. Alternatively, I try to source handmade or bespoke items, such as beautifully knitted woollen hats as Christmas gifts. Krafty Caps were designed to fit into the gifting market as a premium quality cap. The Krafty Cap is made from soft brushed cotton and the patches are intricately embroidered. We hope that the interaction a child has with choosing their Krafty Cap patch means that they see the gift as not only practical but fun too.
